Our Keynote Speaker
Courtney Carson's life has not always looked how it does today; many chapters in his story contain darkness and regret. However, he was given a second chance and has since dedicated his life to advocate for education. As Director of Essential Skills and Community Relations at Richland Community College in Decatur, IL, Carson explains how important it is to train our students for today’s jobs, allowing them to advance their lives in a positive and meaningful way. He focuses on training in the areas of communicating more effectively, thinking critically and creatively, and acting more professionally and responsibly at home and in the workplace. His goal is to give students the training and confidence they need to see how important they are to their community.
In addition to his work at Richland, he is the Associate Minister at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and is a founder of the 20 Men Mentoring Group. He serves on boards of the Illinois Juvenile Justice Initiative, the United Way of Decatur, the South Side Improvement Association and the Organized Action Council, and is a member of the Decatur Board of Education. |
